The highest-quality large light-duty pickup truck of 2022 is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Chevy planned to refresh the 2022 Silverado 1500 light-duty, full-size pickup truck but delayed the improvements due to supply-chain issues. As a result, Chevy carried over the 2021 model-year truck for the first half of the 2022 model year, calling it the Limited, or LTD.
Since J.D. Power fielded the 2022 IQS between February and May 2022, the majority of responses came from owners who purchased the non-refreshed 2022 Silverado Limited (LTD) model before the truck received numerous updates and technology enhancements. With that said, the Silverado you can buy during the second half of 2022 has the improvements Chevy made to the truck. You can read about the changes to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado in our full preview of the new off-road-ready ZR2 model.
The highest-quality large heavy-duty pickup truck of 2022 is the Chevrolet Silverado HD. It comes in 2500 and 3500 series models; the latter can handle up to 36,000 pounds of towing capacity and 7,442 pounds of payload capacity when the truck is properly configured and equipped. You can choose from regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), and crew cab styles with a standard or long cargo bed and a single or dual-rear-wheel axle configuration. Five different trim levels are available.
The highest-quality midsize pickup truck of 2022 is the Ford Ranger. It comes in extended cab (SuperCab) and crew cab (Super Crew) configurations with XL, XLT, and Lariat trim. A Tremor off-road option package makes the 4-wheel-drive (4WD) versions more capable where the pavement ends and adventure begins. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is standard in every 2022 Ranger, supplying 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which is good for towing up to 7,500 pounds of trailer and carrying up to 1,905 pounds of payload.
According to the 2022 APEAL Study, three pickup truck models receive awards based on what the people who own them think of their overall appeal. You will find them listed below in alphabetical order by make and model.
The most appealing large heavy-duty pickup truck of 2022 is the Ford F-Series Super Duty. It comes in F-250, F-350, and F-450 model series and with a regular cab, extended cab (SuperCab), or crew cab configuration. Standard and long cargo beds with single and dual-rear-wheel axle setups are also available, and buyers choose between six different trim levels. Depending on the version of the truck and equipment, the F-Series Super Duty can tow as much as 37,000 pounds and haul up to 7,850 pounds of payload.
The most appealing midsize pickup truck of 2022 is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. A new model for 2022, the Santa Cruz is based on the Hyundai Tucson compact crossover SUV, and it comes only as a crew cab with an integrated short cargo bed. Four trim levels are available, the top two equipping the truck with a powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The Santa Cruz supplies 5,000 pounds of towing capacity with the turbo engine and AWD, but all versions of the truck can carry up to 1,411 pounds of payload.
The Santa Cruz is one of the smallest pickups you can buy and is a direct competitor to the Ford Maverick. It drives more like an SUV than a traditional truck and offers many of the same interior amenities, infotainment technologies, and driving-assistance systems as the Tucson. Numerous accessories upgrade the Santa Cruz to accommodate a wide range of outdoor activities.
The most appealing large light-duty pickup truck of 2022 is the Ram 1500. It comes in extended cab (Quad Cab) and crew cab configurations with short and standard cargo beds. The Ram 1500 is available in seven trim levels, including the Rebel off-roader and the TRX high-performance off-roader. When properly configured and equipped, the Ram 1500 offers 12,750 pounds of towing capacity and 2,300 pounds of payload capacity.
The Ram 1500 Classic is a continuation of the previous-generation version of this truck, which dates back to 2009. It is available in three trims and in regular cab, extended cab (Quad Cab), and crew cab configurations with short, standard, and long cargo beds. The maximum towing capacity is 10,620 pounds, and the Ram 1500 Classic can carry 1,810 pounds of payload. This version of the truck is unchanged for 2022.
Shoppers searching for a more conventional pickup truck that still offers a prudent price tag can move up to a mid-size option like the 2022 Chevy Colorado WT. The Colorado offers a variety of cab and cargo bed options. The WT is available with a two-door extended-cab configuration that seats four or a four-door crew cab that seats five. Bed sizes offered include a long box for the extended cab and a long or short box for the crew cab.
The hot-selling Ford Maverick has proven that customers have been waiting for a compact pickup at an affordable price. And buyers are rabid for this little truck for good reason: The Maverick is easy to drive, easy to park, returns great fuel economy, and can handle chores that other vehicles in this price class simply cannot.
The Maverick is unlike other Ford trucks that rely on heavy, old-tech body-on-frame construction. Instead, the Maverick is built like a car with a lighter-weight combined frame and body structure. It shares its mechanical bits with the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape. And that's no bad thing because it drives more like a small SUV than a typical pickup truck. The Maverick has agility and driving ease that no large pickup can match. That said, when there's no load in the bed and just the driver onboard, the Maverick can feel bouncy. That's not the case with the Maverick's main rival, the smooth-riding [Hyundai Santa Cruz] (/hyundai/santa-cruz/) pickup.
The standard hybrid, front-wheel-drive powertrain is the fuel economy leader. But opting for the turbocharged model and all-wheel drive makes the Maverick more fun to drive and improves its overall truck capabilities. Those who plan to venture into the dirt can opt for the FX4 Off-Road package or the new Tremor package that provides serious trail prowess.
The Maverick delivers a roomy and thoughtful interior with a surprising amount of storage spaces and cubbies. It's easy to find a place to stash your stuff in this truck. The lowest-level XL truck feels downright cheap on the inside, so we recommend spending a few bucks for one of the nicer trims with power-adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control, and improved convenience options. 041b061a72
